Left-Hand Marriage

Research & Development Grant

Left-Hand Marriage is a historical fiction play set in New Orleans in the 1790’s. The story is based on the real life of Marie Jeanne Loriot, a Black New Orleanian, and her taboo relationship with a white doctor from Natchez, Mississippi. This relationship was known as a placage, a type of “marriage” between European men and non-European women when true marriage was illegal. Research is being conducted by Maxine Dillon to insure the historical accuracy of the piece.
