“The Rent Is Too Damn High!” is an exhibition and catalogue publication celebrating the New Orleans tricentennial by putting indigenous Black artists squarely in the center of the narrative about its 300-year legacy. Combining visual with performance art, there will be a mock-debate wherein five mayoral candidates engage with the most pressing issues in contemporary, post-Katrina New Orleans. Each “candidate” will be either a character taken from the annals of New Orleans history or a character hailing from New Orleans’ imagined future, bringing understandings of past movements or future aspirations for liberation, to the questions of today.
