Original Character Statuettes for “Leona and Tessie and Gail and the Cheerleaders”

Research & Development Grant

“Leona and Tessie and Gail and the Cheerleaders” is a travelling play about school desegregation that features civil rights pioneer Dr. Leona Tate. The play will bring to life the seldom told story of three girls chosen to integrate New Orleans school McDonogh 19 as well as its residual impact today and in the future. The audience follows actors playing the characters in the locations where the stories happened and positions the miniature character statuettes such as New Orleans first graders, NAACP lawyers, white moms, Black neighbors, or US marshals on miniature sets to activate the actors in the dynamic story.
